Thonet Montana Chair - Stacking Chair Model A 1250

£1,400.00

Thonet’s Montana Chair, model number A 1250 fabricated from solid birch and plywood.

The label on both chairs was first used in 1922 and the chairs can be seen in Thonet’s catalogue from 1930 placing their design to the late 1920’s.

For us they are a wonderful example of early modernist design arriving just after the peak of Bauhaus. They clearly embrace the shapes and technology of the time. The front legs sit perpendicular to the rest of the chair frame creating cheeky dynamism and the open boomerang lines of rear legs providing a template for countless subsequent designs.

In our opinion they are also the starting point for the Austrian architect Karl Schwanzer Viennese Stacking Chair manufactured by Thonet 30 years later and now highly sort after.

A rare chair that we are in two minds to part with.
